Obituary for Donald S. Walker

Donald S. Walker, 75, of Reading, passed away, Thursday, October 11th, at his residence.

Donald was born in Reading, on November 25, 1942, a son of the late Dorothy G. (Walters) and Chester T. Walker.

He was the husband of Donna Lee (Sanders) Walker.

Mr. Walker graduated from Central Catholic High School. He worked in sales for Singer Equipment, as well as being a musician.

Donald was a loving husband, father and grandfather; he had a love for fast cars, dogs, photography and music. Don's musical career spanned more than 50 years, all beginning at Central Catholic High School where he played sousaphone in the band. Professionally, Don played bass guitar with the Cavaliers and Barry Petri and the Kingsmen. In 1963 Don joined Herb Geri and the Hollidays. Herb, knowing Don played the piano, urged Don to trade in his bass for an organ. The rest is history. Don went on to become one of the best B-3 organ players in the region. Don traveled the US and abroad with such show groups as the Lee Allen Review, Barry Petri and the Jet Set, The Bobby Mercer Road Show and Sam Butera and the Wildest. He also worked with First Class in Reading. In 1991 the Jet Set reunited and he played with them until the early 2000's. In more recent years Don has had gigs with numerous local bands Little Ragu, Burning House and The Uptown Band, just to name a few. Don, inducted into the Berks County Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018 played all genres of music, but his true love was Jazz! Don performed with many groups over the years for the Berks County Jazz Fest. Don is a true musical legend. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him and had the sheer delight of working with him.

In addition to his wife, Donald is survived by
a daughter, Lorie, wife of Michael Klonis, of Bernville;
a son,Steven Stoner, of Gardners, PA.

He is also survived by 3 grandchildren David, Jr and Brittany Walker and Alexander Klonis; and survived by a daughter in law Denise Kelly, Reading.

Donald was predeceased by a son David, June 16, 2017.
